Creative Heater (Gasifier) for Strawboard Production Line

Saengabha Srisopaporn

With an academic background in Social Science from Mahidol Univerisity, I am excited to have the opportunity to be involved with the E-idea project under the campaign initiated by the Kokoboard Company. The company uses agricultural waste to make particle boards, an engineered wood product manufactured from agriculture by-products. Through the use of particle boards, we aim to stop deforestation and extend the life of living green forests for future generations. The company is driven by both social and environmental missions: we aim to save trees and keep the forest for the next generations through innovative technology, and to ease poverty in rural farmer communities.

Vision

In order to realize a sustainable society, organizations both public and private must strive for innovative, technological change to transform our consumerist society that relies on coal and oil for energy production and the exploitation of natural resources for our convenience and comfort. However, technological change is only part of the effort required; a greater effort is necessary to ensure that the economic benefits are distributed equally on a larger scale. It is our vision to support technological change towards a cleaner and greener economy, where the benefits are distributed equally to every sector of the population. Through the Kokoboard initiative, we are taking steps towards this vision by developing a technology that produces particle boards from agricultural by-products or waste such as rice straw, giving it a new added-value. This not only helps reduce carbon dioxide and deforestation, but it also gives a secondary income to rice farmers, addressing the two issues of environmental protection and economic benefit.

What's the project about

We are currently producing more than five types of particle boards made from diverse agricultural by-products such as rice straw, sunflower seeds, rice husks and coconut dust. However, our electricity to run the heavy hot-plate machinery in the production process still depends on the grid system, which produces carbon dioxide. Therefore, our goal in this project is to develop a technology that will allow the production line to be automated by clean energy and technology so that our product will be truly 'green'. The idea is to produce bio-gas from the strawboard chips and leftovers to fuel the heater (gasifier) for board production. We require a 60 x 60cm model gasifier heater for a cleaner production line. The use of the gasifier will lower the cost of investment by reducing our dependence on the electricity grid, and also reduce our carbon footprint.

E-idea and me

E-idea is a great opportunity for us as we are trying to increase the impact of our project on a wider scale. Since we will be assisted by professionals with expertise in the fields of business communication, marketing, social enterprise and other fields throughout the programme, we will learn new approaches, and also overcome some of our challenges we face in the next phase of our project. The international networking opportunities will allow us to go beyond being recognized only in our region and country. It will also allow us to share our experiences and stories to inspire other people around the world.
