Waste Separation and Biowaste Recycling

Jantima Pipitsoontorn

I graduated from Chulalongkorn University with a BSc in Biochemistry. During my time as a student, I was involved in many activities including the role of Chairperson of the Border Patrol Police School Development project in the province of Kanchanaburi as well as the Regional Young Thai Science Ambassador in 2007, a British Council and National Science Museum programme in Thailand.

Our project, with the support of E-idea Thailand, aims to create a practical framework for waste management to the community of Pai, which is situated in the northern province of Mae Hongsorn. Once successfully implemented, our project can be adapted and taken over by the municipality and by other communities or villages in the province.

Vision

We aim to promote Pai to become a green tourism city by focusing on waste management with the participation of municipalities, schools, communities and tourist businesses to solve the overflow of waste pollution in the city caused by urbanization and tourism. In the future, we hope Pai can become a model for sustainable tourism for other areas.

What's the project about

The project consists of three main activities: the promotion of waste separation via the operation of trash banks and presenting awards to members who care about environmental issues; the promotion of garbage separation on commercial streets by creating unique trash tanks featuring the designs and paintings of young Pai volunteer artists, which will strengthen community ownership of the tanks and promote the waste separation policy to tourists and members of the community; and the promotion of the use of biowaste and creation of revenue opportunities by establishing the Learning Centre of Biowaste Recycling.

E-idea and me

Through the cooperation and support of community, businesses, and organizations, we aim to raise people's awareness of the environmental impact of our actions. Participation in E-idea will support our campaign, and provide a platform to exchange knowledge and ideas on how to solve environmental problems at the community, regional and international levels.
